The PORTARA, an entrance door made of Naxos Marble during the period 550 - 560 BC (Centuries before Christ). Tiran Lygdamis intended to build his Temple of Apollon at that time on the small Palatia island – today a peninsula in front of the port of Naxos.
This Port entrance is still complete, as are a number of Naxos Marble fundaments left around its base.
For the Greeks, their God Apollo was the enemy of darkness and all sacrilegious action. He ensured that the fruit flourished, protected shepherds and grazing livestock, and cared for the male youth. As the leader of the Muses (Musagetes), he was also the god of the arts, especially music.
